remember Sugar magnolia was played about 500 times in the Dead's career, there is no "best" version really...there might be a good 10 versions that are perhaps the cream of the crop...here's a few good ones I know of...
05-03-1972 (71 one was the primer year for the consistently great Sugar Mags of 1972)
10-18-1974
12-31-1978 (almost any New Years Sugar Mag)
06-20-1983 (Loopy show, classic version, Garcia wants this one and Bobby Weir is rock star Bobby)
10-27-1991 nice 1991 version with Hornsby
05-21-1995 last "great" Sugar Mag (all things being relative)

If it hasn't already been listed let me make a case for 10/29/77, Evan's Fieldhouse, dekalb, Ill. Some kind soul made available the full 10+ min. version (be wary of the edited version which takes out a fair chunk).

It is such an inspired, rocking rendition, and before getting into the SSDD section Mickey and Billy go off on a crazed drum fill that leaves Bobby literally laughing in amazement as he starts singing SSDD. It's just brilliant!

The Sugar Magnolia on DP10 is the best I ever heard...only because of the incredible jam that Jerry does in the begining of the song before Bobby starts singing. Seriously...dig out DP10 and listen to what I am talking about. It's about the coolest 16 measure jam I think I ever heard Jerry play, in ANY song. I believe the date is 12/30/77.

Personally, I like the version that opened the 2nd set of the New Years show at the Cow Palace in '76. I love Billy & Mickey's crash of the cymbols that lead into Jerry's melodic intro. I love how Jerry switches back & forth from a rich, melodic lead to a thin metalic picking sound. The older I get the more I like the sneeky stuff that Garcia liked to throw in. Those 1 second riffs, that if you listen carefully, just totally make your music day. Music bliss.....

Astonishingly, no mention of Iowa City 8/10/82. This was the 2nd best of all time, behind only Meriweather Post Pavillion 6/20/83

My dad hung out with all these dudes way back when and so did I, apparently! And my real name IS, infact, sugar magnolia. My sister's name is Heavenly Spice, which my dad said also was a Dead reference. Is that true? I can't find it anywhere. FIrst he said to check "Friend of the Devil", but I found nothing about "Spice". Any help? xo sm
Edit: P.S. I saw a great Sugar Magnolia at Shoreline, Summer of '89.
